What are Prosthetics and Orthotics?

Updated: Oct 19, 2020

Prosthetics refers to designing, making, and fitting artificial body parts. Different types of prosthetic devices include bone implants, pacemakers, and fabricated limbs.

Orthotics involves fitting braces and other devices to help with the function and mobility of a patient’s limb or spine. Orthotic devices include back braces, ankle/foot/knee braces, and wrist splints.

Practitioners in the field of orthotics and prosthetics help improve the lives of people who have physical challenges by using medical devices that replace and/or support body parts that are missing or impaired. With technology advancing, prostheses and orthoses can help people do amazing things!
