Which brace is better?

Both braces are effective. It depends on the patient’s individual curve and preference. Your orthopedic doctor may recommend a particular type of brace or they may leave the decision to the patient/orthotist.

What is the difference?

The Rigo-Cheneau (RC) brace has the push built into the brace, while the Boston brace uses push pads. The RC brace has straps in the front, while the Boston brace has straps in the back. Some patients prefer the straps in the back because they are less visible, while others prefer the straps in the front because it may be easier to tighten the straps. The RC brace also rises higher under the arm. For higher curves this can be helpful for getting more correction on the higher part of the curve. The Boston brace uses pads so it is easier to adjust by adding or subtracting pads as necessary.

How much does the brace cost?

It depends on your insurance plan. Your deductible and percentage coinsurance all affect your share of cost. Out of pocket the RC is about $200 to $500 more expensive than the Boston brace. Scoliosis braces generally range from $1500 to $2300. Each brace is custom made so brace price can vary.

Do both braces help correct the rotational aspect of the curve?

Yes, both the Boston 3D and RC brace are custom made to apply 3D forces to the rotational aspect of the curve.
